Free online critique event

This event is free and open to all current SCBWI CenCal members, but you must pre-register by January 23 to ensure a spotRegistration will close on January 24. When you register, be sure to indicate which type of manuscript you plan to share: picture book, rhyming picture book, middle grade, young adult, nonfiction, or (if you are an illustrator) illustration. You can choose only one category. Also, please indicate whether or not you wish for your name and email to be included on a critique connections list which will be emailed to participants wanting to form critique groups.

How it works

Before the Event

We will place you into small critique circles of about 5 people after January 23 and provide you with information on whom to swap manuscript pages with (first 10 pages for middle grade and ya or full manuscript for picture books, one pdf & “elevator pitch” for illustrators), You will send your manuscript to the others in your critique circle by January 28. Between January 28 and February 5 you’ll read the manuscripts you receive (about 4 manuscripts) and make notes you want to share. For illustrators wanting feedback on an art piece without a manuscript for critique, please submit a pdf of your image including a short “elevator pitch” of the story.

During the Event

We’ll have a brief full group meeting to discuss critique guidelines and prepare you for the breakout critique circles. Each critique circle will have a moderator to oversee things and keep the discussion going. As a group, you’ll discuss each manuscript in turn, offering feedback and suggestions.

After the Event

If you opt to include your name on the critique connections handout you’ll receive the handout and can connect with others listed on the sheet to create critique partners or groups.
Before registering please make sure you are logged in to the SCBWI homepage. This event is open to SCBWI members only. If you are unable to register or can’t see the options it means either you aren’t logged in to SCBWI (so the system doesn’t recognize you as a member) or your membership has lapsed (check your SCBWI homepage profile).
